Making A Scene: Over Fifty Years of Alternative Bay Area Spaces
Exhibition: Thursday, July 9 through Thursday, August 20
Opening Reception: Thursday, July 9, 2015 6-9pm
Where: 934 Brannan St. (between 8th & 9th)
Madison will be creating installation, video and performance works for this historical exhibition utilizing footage and documentation from her curatorial work at Femina Potens Art Gallery.
What: Making A Scene: Over Fifty Years of Alternative Bay Area Spaces is a group exhibition with an active participation and learning series that presents the most important, yet generally unknown alternative art spaces in the Bay Area over the last 50 years in order to unite their disparate yet overlapping and contingent histories of cultural engagement, community development and social justice.
Making a Scene will feature projects by current and historic Bay Area artist-run, independent and alternative spaces since the 1960’s, emphasizing how the African American, immigrant, LGBTQIQ communities and other under-invested populations in San Francisco decentralized the visual arts from a largely white upper-class commercial epicenter and democratized cultural participation through the establishment of what are now termed “alternative spaces”.
What: Night Light: Making a Scene
When: Saturday, July 18, 2015 Sunset to Midnight
Night Light: Making a Scene is a one-night-only, multidisciplinary, social-practice programming event for the exhibition Making a Scene: Fifty Years of Bay Area Alternative Spaces. Making a Scene is a 6-week group exhibition that presents the history of Bay Area alternative spaces, highlights the pioneers and contemporary trailblazers of social justice, and features art and installations by current and historic Bay Area artists. The exhibition will be on display July 9 – August 2015 and features Rene Yañez’s Dia de los Muertos installations and his historic founding of Latino focused alternative art spaces; Emory Douglas and his revolutionary art for the Black Panther Party; Media Burn by Ant Farm and Chip Lord which repositioned media performance art in public; and Annie Sprinkle’s Pollination Pod, a mobile museum of alternative sexual identity.
These works embody some of the boldest art activists, as most began their work during a time when the United States was experiencing radical movements that uprooted and exposed the various levels of police brutality, discrimination, and lack of representation for their communities. As a reflection of then and now, we will explore social practice as an activity and inquiry. What has changed since 1960? What is the same? What does alternative space mean now as opposed to what it meant then? What communities need alternative spaces now? What communities are making a scene?
On July 18, 2015, this series of Night Light will pay homage to the Rebel-rousers, trouble-makers, independents, and outliers living and in the after-life. Night Light will illuminate the ways in which we make a scene in the face of injustice and feature the art of performing and media artists.
By day, SOMArts will be bustling with performances and video projections of moments in time when people refused to be silenced in the face of oppression. At sunset, Night Light artists will transform the garden, Bay Gallery, Main Gallery, and the exterior grounds into an underworld communication with the ancestors who have paved the way. SOMArts will be activated by light installations, video projections and various mediums of performance art, featuring new works by Bay Area artists and activists.
